ACT NOW to tell Congress to protect rivers and invest in nature-based solutions to flooding.
The House of Representatives just introduced a bill that would make FEMA an independent agency which would include major reforms in an effort to get funding to flooded communities faster. This proposal is a good start to improving FEMA’s services delivery to communities impacted by natural hazards.

August 29th marks 20 years since Hurricane Katrina made landfall on the Gulf Coast, damaging levees resulting in major flooding and chaos. We’ve learned a lot about flood management in the last 20 years, resulting in increased investments in nature-based solutions, improved levee safety, and improved coordination between local, state, and federal agencies- but there’s A LOT more that needs to be improved. Recent concerted efforts to roll back federal funding for natural hazards like floods and even to eliminate FEMA altogether will put communities in danger.
