Victory for Past Endangered River Comes on Eve of 2009 Endangered Rivers List Release
Each year, American Rivers works with local partners to shine a national spotlight on 10 rivers facing uncertain futures. While the release of America’s Most Endangered Rivers™: 2009 Edition is less than three weeks away (April 7), we have good news to report on a 2007 endangered river. In December, the U.S. Department of Commerce rejected the proposed Foothill South toll road, which threatened San Mateo Creek and surfing at the famous Trestles Beach. Earlier last year, the California Coastal Commission had rejected plans for the controversial proposal due to violations of the state's coastal management program, but proponents appealed that decision to the federal level. Ripple Effect: This Month's News and Victories
Outdated Dam Removed in New Hampshire Thanks to the work of American Rivers and our partners, removal recently began on the aging Maxwell Pond Dam on Black Brook that had exacerbated local flooding and threatened critical infrastructure. American Rivers worked with the City of Manchester and an array of state and local partners to remove the dam, which will improve water quality and restore seven miles of habitat for migratory fish. Bill with Sewage Spill Notification Requirement Closer to Passage For months, our online activists have helped us urge Congress to protect public health by notifying the public when sewage spills into their local rivers and streams. This month, the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure made an important step forward on this issue when it passed a bill that included notification provisions. More
