EPA Kills Yazoo Pumps in Historic Victory

Yazoo Pumps Action AlertA decades-long battle to save vital wetlands in Mississippi’s Yazoo backwater ended this month. In a victory for taxpayers and the environment the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) vetoed -- an action rarely taken -- the Yazoo Pumps project which would have drained and damaged 200,000 acres of wetlands, and wasted $220 million in federal tax dollars. In 2007, we listed the Kinnickinnic River as one of America’s Most Endangered Rivers™ due to toxic sediments accumulated from years of neglect. This listing shone a spotlight on the need to restore this river, and now thanks to funding from the federal government and the state of Wisconsin, dredging of those toxic sediments is expected to start in the spring of 2009.
