EPA Kills Yazoo Pumps in Historic Victory
A decades-long battle to save vital wetlands in Mississippi’s Yazoo backwater ended this month. In a victory for taxpayers and the environment the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) vetoed -- an action rarely taken -- the Yazoo Pumps project which would have drained and damaged 200,000 acres of wetlands, and wasted $220 million in federal tax dollars. American Rivers and NOAA Award Grants to Restore Rivers and Improve Fish Passage
Five restoration projects received funding from a partnership program between American Rivers and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) this month. The grants were awarded to projects in five states to improve fish passage on rivers. More

Most Endangered River Gets $22 Million For Cleanup (Wisconsin) In 2007, we listed the Kinnickinnic River as one of America’s Most Endangered Rivers™ due to toxic sediments accumulated from years of neglect. This listing shone a spotlight on the need to restore this river, and now thanks to funding from the federal government and the state of Wisconsin, dredging of those toxic sediments is expected to start in the spring of 2009.
