Deficient Dams Around the Country Put Communities at Risk

Apply Now! Stream Barrier Removal Grants Available
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) awarded American Rivers $800,000 to fund the removal of dams and other stream barriers in the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, Northwest and California. Since 2001, NOAA has partnered with us to provide communities with financial and technical assistance to restore stream habitats that benefit fish and local economies. Apply by December 3rd to be eligible for the next round of funding. More

River Action Day Participants Meet with Congress Last month, river advocates from across the country spoke out for healthy rivers on Capitol Hill. In total, these activists attended more than 170 meetings with Members of Congress and their staff. Their efforts proved successful, helping to advance sewage right-to-know and Wild and Scenic bills. Congress Begins Process of Reforming the Corps of Engineers For the first time in seven years, Congress passed a bill to authorize water resources projects and reform the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the nation’s primary river management agency. The bill is a mixed bag for river enthusiasts, but it does require the Corps to update its obsolete planning guidelines, replace habitat lost to water projects, and conduct a comprehensive study of flood risks and flood management. Local Blogger Calls for Action on the Endangered Neuse River Sue Sturgis, a blogger from North Carolina, is taking a stand for her state’s Neuse River, listed in the AMERICA’S MOST ENDANGERED RIVERS: 2007 Edition.  RiverAlert: Protect Communities from Hazardous Dams
As you read above, throughout our country deficient dams are living on borrowed time and many of our communities are at risk. Congress must dedicate significant funding to address unsafe, high hazard dams through either repair or removal. Urge your representative to support The Dam Rehabilitation and Repair Act of 2007 to direct $200 million to states for improving the safety of publicly-owned dams. Act Now
